Yes. New hires can choose to move themselves the department agrees. Clear communication between the new hire and the department must be established to address any tax or reimbursement concerns.
How should office or lab equipment be moved?
Office and lab equipment should be moved separately from household items and personal effects. Please contact the department administrator to make arrangements.
Can I use a moving agent that is near my old house if it has a national affiliate that Cornell University also uses, e.g., United Van Lines?
Yes. However, the new hire must book the move through one of the suppliers/moving agents that matches the national affiliate in your origin city. The new hire should provide the hiring department administrator with the desired agent’s contact information so that the request can be forwarded to Cornell’s local booking agent. The booking agent will coordinate the household move with the origin city moving agent and the new hire.
Can a non-preferred moving company be used?
Yes. However, SMS cannot ensure resolution of any problems encountered with any moving companies other than those with whom Cornell University has a contractual agreement. Lower estimates from outside moving agents may not include equal valuation, shuttle charges, or the same level of supplier responsibilities that the contract contains.
