Form 1098-E

Form 1098-E reports the amount of interest paid on a student loan. Each student receiving a 1098-E form is responsible for determining whether he or she is eligible to deduct the interest in accordance with IRS regulations.

See IRS Forms and Publications for more details. For other questions about the 1098-E form, contact the Student Loan office, (607) 255-7234.

What is a 1098-E form?

A 1098-E form is a "Student Loan Interest Statement" issued to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and to student loan recipients to report student loan interest paid to the lender throughout the year.

Note:  Review the information form IRS to determine if you are eligible for a deduction.

Where can I obtain additional information about eligibility for the deduction?

See the "Student Loan Interest Deduction Worksheet" that accompanies your 1040 or 1040A form, as well as IRS Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education. Note that this link may not contain information about the newest Tax Cuts and Jobs Act passed in December 2017.

Why did I receive a 1098-E form from Cornell?

Cornell issues a 1098-E form to all student loan recipients who paid interest to Cornell on a student loan.

I did not receive a 1098-E form. What office do I contact for help?

Contact ECSI stating you did not receive form 1098-E (see 1098-E contact information on the Bursar website). Be sure to include your name, Cornell student ID number, and mailing address.
