Foreign National Tax Profile

Virtual office hours available to foreign national students

For 2025, Zoom sessions will be held every other Wednesday, starting February 12, from 10-11:00 a.m. and limited to 20 participants. Foreign national students or anyone with questions about tax rules for foreign nationals can register to join the Zoom call. You will receive a confirmation email with the Zoom information after you register.

Register Now

These sessions are subject to change depending on staff availability. You will be notified if the session for which you registered has been canceled.

If you are a foreign national who receives payments from Cornell University other than travel reimbursement and honorarium, you must complete a profile in Sprintax Calculus. Sprintax Calculus helps you determine your U.S. tax status and eligibility for a U.S. Tax Treaty and helps Cornell evaluate your U.S. tax status for proper tax withholding (i.e., eligibility for exemption from income or FICA taxes, etc.).

Activating Your Profile

After your appointment at Cornell is activated in Workday, you will receive an email from Sprintax Calculus (noreply@sprintax.com) titled, "Cornell University - Welcome to Sprintax Calculus."

  1. Click the activation link in the email you will receive from noreply@sprintax.com titled "Cornell University - Welcome to Sprintax Calculus." The link is specific to you, and it activates your account and lets you create a password in Sprintax.
    1. If you have previously registered for Sprintax Returns using the same email address, you can use the same account sign-in for your Sprintax Calculus profile. You won't have to use the activation link unless you want to change your password.
  2. Activate your account within 24 hours. You must get a new activation link if you don’t activate the account within 24 hours. Refer to the email you received for how to request a new 24-hour link.

If you cannot complete your profile in Sprintax Calculus, please contact us using this Tax Office Form.

Updating Your Profile

You are responsible for keeping your profile updated to avoid tax withholding errors. You may receive an annual notification from the system asking you to renew your tax treaty information.

You must update your profile:

  • As soon as you receive your U.S. Social Security Number (SSN). Your profile is not complete until you provide your SSN in Sprintax Calculus.
  • Any time there is a change in your status. If your status changes in any way (e.g., visa status, starting circular or optional practical training, extension of your stay, etc.), update your profile and documentation in Sprintax Calculus accordingly. Keeping your information accurate helps us withhold the correct amount of tax from payments you receive from Cornell and send you the proper annual income tax reporting forms you need.
