In case you haven’t noticed, on August 30, 2017, the IRS updated its website as part of the “IRS Future State Initiative” to utilized current technology to enhance the taxpayer experience and overall efficiency of the IRS. Although this is not a complete summary of the changes to the website, we wanted to highlight some of the new features that may benefit the working and student bodies that make up Cornell University as a whole.
While nothing can beat the support international students can receive from our International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO), the IRS has made it easier for international students to obtain information directly from the IRS about Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs) by putting a link to the ITIN information directly on the IRS website’s homepage. While our ISSO website has its own ITIN support page, which is more student specific, the IRS has made it easier to find information for students who like to do their own tax research. As for Cornell departments, we can continue directing international students to the ISSO webpage, but also have more confidence when we encourage them to navigate the IRS website.
The new design of the IRS website is now mobile-friendly, so you can now navigate it using devices such as tablets or smart phones. The site now has single, vertical scrolling with all one-touch navigate icons and links to quick information, forms, news, and highlights. With more and more individuals worldwide using mobile devices as their primary device for accessing the Internet, this new IRS website design can meet the needs of the generations to come.
