NY State Residency

If you are an incoming student, residency status is determined at the time of your admission by the Admissions Office. After your first semester, any changes in residency status can be reviewed by the University Bursar by submitting an application and required documentation. If you’re unsure of your current residency status for tuition purposes, contact your college registrar directly.

Application Deadlines

To establish residency status for tuition purposes, submit your application by the following deadlines for each semester. You only need to apply once. If you apply and are approved, it will remain valid unless there are changes in your residency status.

  • Fall Semester: June 1
  • Spring Semester: November 1

The resident tuition rate applies to the following undergraduate colleges only:

  • Human Ecology
  • Industrial & Labor Relations
  • Agriculture & Life Sciences
  • Cornell Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy - Bachelor of Science
  • Cornell SC Johnson College of Business – Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management

There is no resident tuition rate for the endowed colleges of Architecture, Arts & Planning, Arts & Sciences, Engineering, and Hotel Administration. Resident status for students in the College of Veterinary Medicine is determined by that college. Information is available from the College of Veterinary Medicine's admissions office.

Notes:

  • Application and supporting documents must be sent via U.S. mail. Do NOT fax or email any information.
  • Students are responsible for promptly notifying their college registrars if their NYS residency status for tuition purposes at Cornell has changed to non-resident. Once notified, the college will update the residency status, and the tuition will be adjusted to the nonresident rate, effective for the current and future semesters.
